Is Low Water Pressure Always a Sign of a Leaky Water Line?

The water supply in your home must remain pressurized so that water can easily flow through the pipes and through the faucets and fixtures you use every day. If your water pressure is lowered for any reason, you’ll certainly notice the change when you shower, rinse dishes, or even just when you wash your hands. But besides worrying about only the inconvenience of a sudden water pressure drop, you should be just as concerned about the source of the lowered pressure.

Low water pressure may be due to a leak in the pipes that supply water to the building, a serious problem which requires immediate water line repair. The water line is of course responsible for carrying the water from your municipal water supply into your home. When there is even just a small hole, the water pressure may become significantly reduced, as much of it is now lost to the surrounding area. This could mean flooding in the yard, a damaged foundation, or problematic leakage behind the walls. And any pooling water may be dangerous for your family’s health, as mold could begin to develop as a result. It’s also important to note that, often, you won’t notice an immediate loss in pressure with a plumbing leak, so a periodic maintenance visit is highly recommended.

However, lowered water pressure does not always indicate a water line leak. If the problem only occurs with hot water, it may be indicative of problems with the water heater tank. There may be debris clogging the outlet pipe, or a buildup in the tank that alters the pressure. In order to prevent water from leaking out of the tank or your hot water heater to quit working suddenly, immediate professional attention is the best course of action.

Another cause could be an accumulation of scale brought on by the minerals in hard water. “Hard water” is a condition found in many homes which means that an excess of minerals in the water could leave deposits behind. These continue to gather in the pipes until the space becomes smaller and smaller, limiting the pressure until there is nothing that can be done except replacement. If it’s caught early enough, a technician can descale the pipes and install a water softener at a point-of-entry for your water supply.
